Pack to School is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping children of the homeless living in Denver area shelters.
"My first day of second grade was at a strange school in a new town. I had no friends yet, and I was scared. I had just put my bag of brand-new supplies on the floor and rested my elbow on the desk behind me, when the mean little boy in back of me hit my arm as hard as he could. Because I didn't want anyone to see me cry, I hid my face in the bag and pretended to look for my pencils. I was lonely and miserable, but I knew at the end of the day I could go home and be safe."
Remember your first day in a strange school? Remember how frightened and lonely you felt? Remember how you wished it would get better? FOR SOME CHILDREN IT DOESN'T GET BETTER.
Children of homeless families living in shelters enter unfamiliar schools with no supplies, inadequate clothing, and the constant fear that tomorrow they might not have a place to sleep. PACK TO SCHOOL helps these children every day.
PACK TO SCHOOL WAS founded in 1992 by three Denver women who wanted to make a difference in their community. They help between 800 and 1000 needy children every year by giving them brand-new backpacks filled with school supplies. PACK TO SCHOOL's founders believe having the proper learning tools will raise a child's self-esteem, set the stage for learning, and thereby help break the cycle of poverty.
